Have you ever imagined producing electricity on a wood stove?

The theory came true, but I still had to go further.I conducted this experiment to see if I could produce electricity using the surplus heat from the wood stove.

Power Generation Module

I installed two thermoelectric elements that can be used stably even at a surface temperature of up to 250 degrees Celsius on the aluminum plate and connected them in series. And I installed computer CPU radiator and cooling fan for cooling. It is said that the greater the temperature difference between the both surface of the element, the more power they can produce.

Installation of Power Generation Module

I tried to generate power by installing the generation module vertically on the stove pipe. The module was brought into contact with the heat-absorbing surface at the appropriate height of the chimney that can use heat, and was fixed with a stainless steel band.

Power Generation Performance

I added firewood to the firebox and burned it to heat up the stove, and the chimney gradually became hot. The LED of the constant voltage module did not light up, but it was confirmed by the multimeter that electricity was produced. The voltage was lower than expected. I confirmed that the surface temperature of the stove pipe, which installed the first power module with a contact thermometer, was less than 100 degrees Celsius. So, the power generation module was installed at a lower level. The intensity of wood fires in the stove was increased and a cooling fan was operated to try to make a difference in temperature. Although it was possible to secure a voltage of up to 3.5 volts, it was far less than the target voltage of 6.5 volts for operating the system.

Conclusion, Improvements

There are two sides of the thermoelectric element, and the heating surface should absorb heat as much as possible within the endurance limit, and the surface to be cooled should be cooled as cold as possible. And the larger the temperature difference between the two sides, the higher the power is produced. It should be devised to maintain a large temperature difference between the thermoelectric elements.

※ Disclaimer: Using a stove in a confined space can be very dangerous. When using a stove, be sure to ventilate properly and be prepared for fire or other safety accidents. I am not responsible for any loss or injury caused by carelessness.
